The Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corp has urged parents and guardians to exert calmness and avoid unnecessary panic, as Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari is working hard to ensure that security and safety is brought back to schools in the country.

In his words, the NSCDC’s Director, Public Relations, DCC Olusola Odumosu said “I want to assure Nigerian parents especially, because they could be unnecessary apprehension which of course is affecting our educational fabric, the President is not resting, very soon Nigeria will be a secure environment especially that of our schools”.

Speaking to newsmen at the recently concluded Nigeria Union of Journalists (FRCN) Headquarters Chapel Press Week with the theme, “Effective Border Security: A Panacea for Safe Schools and Society”, held at National Press Centre, Radio House, Abuja, on the 3rd of December, 2021, the Director, Public Relations, NSCDC, Abuja, DCC Olusola Odumosu further said that different stakeholders are being engaged to give security education and enlightenment, as knowledge on what to do at critical moments for personal safety is a necessary step to be taken, if insecurity must be curbed.

“The female squads have been going from school to school educating and giving security tips to students in the 36 States of the Federation. We are advocating for security education to be inculcated in the school curriculum, this will help to inculcate security consciousness into teachers and children” he further added.

Odumosu who emphasized the need for citizens’ safety education, maintained that it will help build intelligence and intuition, to be able to detect security threats and stay alert.

Also, while calling on the appropriate authorities to look into the issue of insecurity in schools, stakeholders present at the event affirmed that sadly, ‘Banditry business’ is gradually becoming a lucrative industry in Nigeria, as the high rate of insecurity crippling into the Nigerian educational system in recent time is not just unbecoming but frightening to both parents and children alike.
