NUJ FCT COUNCIL ELECTION: OGBECHE RE-ELECTED

The Editor, Abuja Inquirer Newspaper, Emmanuel Ogbeche has been declared winner of the recently concluded NUJ FCT Council election, as he was overwhelmingly re-elected Chairman by members of the fourth estate.

The election which started at about 12: 00 noon on the 4th of December, 2021, at Council Secretariat in Utako, Abuja, had 520 accredited voters, 518 casted votes and 9 void votes. However, Ogbeche won by 450 votes as opposed to his opponent Donald Ugwu of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) who had 59 votes.

The re-elected Chairman who said that emerging winner of the election would have had no meaning without a contest, urged his opponent, Ugwu to join him in taking NUJ, FCT Council to the top. “For those who ran against us, without you this contest would have no meaning. We offer you a hand of friendship, we invite you to join us to take the FCT Council to the next level. Let the ideas you have bare and we are willing to work with you.”

He further pledged to work closely with partners and stakeholders in order to achieve media independence, advocacy and rights of Journalists in the FCT and by extension, Nigeria.

Other winners, who scaled through, unopposed, include; Patrick Osadebamwen of The Tribune Newspaper as Vice Chairman, Ochiaka Ugwu of People’s Daily as Secretary, Aisha Kadala of Aso Radio and Television as Treasurer, Gloria Essien of Voice of Nigeria as Financial Secretary and Dorcas Jonah from New Agency of Nigerias, Abuja Chapel as Assistant Secretary. 

Recall that Emmanuel Ogbeche was in 2018 elected chairman of the FCT Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists for a three year tenure, as he defeated Haija Rafatu Salami of the voice of Nigeria (VON) by 338 votes to 193.
