Every 26th June marks the observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, a pivotal occasion to underscore the pernicious consequences of drug abuse while advocating for preventive measures and heightened consciousness in combating drug usage and trafficking.
Drug abuse stands as a grave and widespread global predicament, impacting individuals indiscriminately, irrespective of age, race, or socioeconomic standing. The deleterious ramifications encompass an array of health concerns, encompassing addiction, overdose, and mental health disorders. Additionally, drug abuse jeopardizes social relationships, employment prospects, and educational pursuits.

Illicit drug trade presents a lucrative source of income for organized criminal syndicates, engendering an environment ripe for violence and corruption. Indeed, in certain instances, drug trafficking has been intrinsically linked to acts of terrorism.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) approximates that over 200 million individuals engage in drug usage globally, with approximately 35 million grappling with the shackles of addiction. Furthermore, UNODC estimates the annual profit generated by the illicit drug trade exceeds US$300 Billion.

A plethora of strategies can be implemented to address the scourge of drug abuse and illicit trafficking. These include heightening public awareness regarding the hazards intrinsic to drug abuse, providing comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation facilities for drug users, and adopting stringent measures to suppress the illicit drug trade. Moreover, concerted efforts should be directed towards tackling the root causes of drug abuse, including poverty, unemployment, and social exclusion.

During this commemoration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, it is incumbent upon all stakeholders to unite and raise awareness concerning this grave predicament. Moreover, we must fervently champion measures aimed at preventing drug usage and trafficking, and solemnly remember the victims of drug abuse, along with the affected families whose lives have been irrevocably altered.
Concomitantly, 26th June also marks the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. This occasion affords an invaluable opportunity to vociferously condemn the abhorrent act of torture while extending reverence, support, and solidarity to victims and survivors of torture across the globe.

Torture represents a profound violation of human rights, characterized by the deliberate infliction of severe physical or mental anguish, perpetrated with the intent to extract information or confessions, dispense punitive measures, or intimidate and coerce individuals or groups.
Alas, the pervasiveness of torture cannot be denied. The United Nations estimates that within the past five years, in excess of 26 Million individuals have been subjected to torture or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment.
Victims of torture endure a broad spectrum of physical and psychological ailments, encompassing bodily injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders. Furthermore, the adverse consequences of torture extend to the victim’s personal relationships, employment prospects, and educational attainment, leaving indelible scars on their lives.
To forestall the perpetration of torture, a series of comprehensive measures can be undertaken, encompassing the ratification and enforcement of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, education and training initiatives targeting law enforcement officials and other pertinent personnel, and the provision of dedicated support services for torture victims.
On this momentous occasion of the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, let us rally collectively, and in unwavering solidarity, unequivocally condemn this heinous crime. Furthermore, we must demonstrate unwavering commitment to extend unwavering support to the victims and survivors of torture. It is imperative to uphold the fundamental principle that torture constitutes a severe violation of human rights and must never be tolerated under any circumstances.
In conclusion, as we commemorate the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, as well as the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, it is incumbent upon each and every one of us to join hands in a concerted effort to raise awareness about these grave challenges. Together, we must champion preventive measures, highlight the devastating consequences of drug abuse and illicit trafficking, and work tirelessly to eradicate these scourges from our societies.
HAPPY INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST DRUG ABUSE AND ILLICIT TRAFFICKING, AND
HAPPY UNITED NATIONS INTERNATIONAL DAY IN SUPPORT OF VICTIMS OF TORTURE.
